U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Regional Water Board Sue San Francisco Over Discharges in the Bay

On May 1, 2024, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Regional Water Quality Control Board for the San Francisco Bay (Regional Board) sued the City and County of San Francisco (City) in federal court for failing to prevent billions of gallons of untreated sewage, wastewater, and stormwater runoff (combined sewage) from spilling into the San Francisco Bay. [United States, et al., v. City and County of San Francisco, Case No. 3:24-cv-02594-SK (N.D. Cal.)]. The complaint seeks monetary fines and injunctive relief for alleged past and ongoing violations of the federal Clean Water Act (CWA) and related California laws.
