Janlynn Fleener Receives Sacramento Business Journal’s 2024 Women Who Mean Business Award

June 3, 2024

Downey Brand is proud to announce that Managing Partner Janlynn Fleener has been selected as a 2024 Women Who Mean Business Awards honoree. This prominent recognition, presented by the Sacramento Business Journal, celebrates dynamic, accomplished, and influential businesswomen in the Sacramento region.

“Jan has been a terrific role model and mentor to me throughout my 17+ years at Downey Brand, and I was thrilled to nominate her for this award,” said litigation partner Annie Amaral. “Jan is an exceptional litigator and leader, and her collaborative approach makes everyone feel like a valued member of the team.”

As the firm’s managing partner, Jan exemplifies unwavering commitment, overseeing all 100 Downey Brand attorneys and approximately 80 professional support staff. She leads the work of the firm’s six-person executive committee — which handles policy, strategic direction, and growth initiatives for the firm — and also oversees the implementation of that strategy as well as day-to-day law firm operations. Jan’s active engagement in client development and satisfaction is instrumental in the firm’s client retention.

Prior to being elected managing partner, Jan served as chair of the firm’s Litigation Department for nine years, where she oversaw the casework for 40 to 50 attorneys, trained and mentored young lawyers, and ensured that the attorneys and staff had the support and resources they needed to achieve success.

Jan’s professional success as a trial lawyer is equally impressive. With over 30 years of experience as a litigator, she has served as lead trial counsel for many of the region’s leading companies, handling their litigation matters from start to finish. Her work for clients has included numerous trials in state and federal courts, including jury trials that resulted in substantial verdicts in favor of her clients.

Outside of work, Jan is a Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum (Class XX, 2016). She has been a member of various organizations dedicated to the arts, including the Advisory Board of the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at UC Davis for ten years, beginning her term as board chair in 2019. Most recently, Jan was elected to the Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
