Downey Brand Honored with Best Real Estate Project Award for Sacramento Office Renovation

Downey Brand is proud to announce that the Sacramento Business Journal has recognized our Sacramento office renovation as one of the Best Real Estate Projects of 2025 in the office renovation category.

Completed in August 2024, the renovation transformed our 52,000-square-foot office at 621 Capitol Mall into a space that reflects both the firm’s nearly 100-year history and our forward-looking vision. Classic elements, such as rich cherry wood and marble finishes, blend seamlessly with modern, streamlined workspaces designed to support collaboration and client service.

A lease extension and the continued partnership with Shorenstein, which owns 621 Capitol Mall, made the renovation possible.

“Our goal was to create a space that honors our history while embracing the future,” said Managing Partner Janlynn Robinson Fleener. “I wanted our space to look like a 1926 law firm — updated and modern — meshed with a hip, boutique hotel. Overall, the feel is just great. All of our employees love it; the new and improved law firm, not your granddad’s law firm.”

Fleener added, “We added more offices and more public space within a smaller footprint,” explaining that the renovation reduced the amount of space in the building by approximately 9,000 square feet. “We looked at the needs … and spent several months on space planning and how could we most effectively use the space.”
