Downey Brand attorneys and staff once again laced up their running shoes and joined the Valentine Run/Walk “Race for Justice” in support of Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC). Traditionally held on the second Saturday in February, this year’s event coincided with Valentine’s Day, making for a fun and meaningful way to spend the weekend.
The Race for Justice is one of LSNC’s largest and most important annual fundraisers, drawing hundreds of participants each year to support its mission of providing free civil legal assistance to individuals and families facing crisis situations. The event helps fund LSNC’s work serving clients across 23 Northern California counties and advancing access to justice through legal representation and broader advocacy.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone from the firm who came out to participate and show their support. Now in its 23rd year, the Race for Justice has become an annual tradition for Downey Brand, with attorneys, staff, and their families returning year after year to support LSNC’s mission.
Downey Brand & LSNC: From Founding Roots to Lasting Impact
Downey Brand’s connection to Legal Services of Northern California reflects a longstanding commitment to public service and pro bono work dating back decades. In 1956, Jack Downey helped establish the Legal Aid Society of Sacramento County, guided by his belief that lawyers have a responsibility to provide access to legal representation for those who cannot afford it. He also encouraged early pro bono participation at the firm, helping build a volunteer panel that provided direct legal services and practical training for young attorneys.
That local effort ultimately grew into today’s LSNC, which is now celebrating 70 years of providing civil legal aid and serves communities across 23 Northern California counties from its headquarters in Sacramento. Downey Brand remains proud to continue that legacy through its ongoing pro bono work, community partnership, and longstanding support of LSNC’s mission to expand access to justice.
