Downey Brand Welcomes Two New Associates to Sacramento Office

Downey Brand is pleased to welcome new associates Shelby M. Barsam and Monica Browner. Both were summer associates at the firm in 2018 and recently passed the California Bar Exam.

Shelby brings a unique and creative problem-solving skillset to the firm’s employment law practice, which encompasses general employment litigation, class action defense, and complex business litigation. She also represents clients in an advisory capacity, counseling them on a multitude of employment- and business-related matters. Shelby graduated from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law with great distinction in 2019. While in law school, Shelby was the Legislation Primary Editor of University of the Pacific Law Review and completed an externship with the Honorable Troy. L Nunley of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California. Shelby received her Bachelor of Arts from UCLA in 2014.

Monica is a member of the firm’s well-regarded environmental law practice where she delivers strong legal representation by way of her exceptional knowledge of state and federal environmental laws and regulations. She guides clients through a broad range of legal issues arising from a capricious and exceedingly complex regulatory landscape, ensuring that they remain compliant. While attending the University of Michigan School of Law, Monica served as president of the Women Law Students Association and volunteered as a coach for a high school mock trial team. Prior to law school, Monica helped grow a start-up property management company in the Bay Area run out of a small garage into a successful 40+ employee company managing millions in assets throughout California and Washington. She is also an alumna of Santa Clara University, having graduated in 2015 with her Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude.
