Several of our attorneys serve in leadership positions for industry associations and have given presentations and provided comments on the regulations proposed by the Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources to address well fracking. Downey Brand’s energy lawyers provide practical and efficient legal advice as well as strategic advocacy designed to advance our clients’ interests.
Our practice includes renewable and traditional electric energy sources, and oil and gas development.
- Energy Project Permitting: Our energy lawyers advocate for all necessary permits and approvals for energy infrastructure in California and Nevada. Our experience in renewable energy began with the development of solar energy in the early 1990s with the solar electric generating systems (SEGS) and early geothermal development in Southern California to recent utility scale solar and wind projects. On the traditional energy side we also permit oil and gas fields, and gas fired generation. We set the precedent for analyzing greenhouse gas impacts of power plants. Our projects include linear facilities such as pipelines and transmission lines. Our work in this area frequently involved obtaining 404 permits from Army Corps and Section 7 incidental take permits from US Fish and Wildlife.
- Energy Regulatory Proceedings: We represent individuals and groups in rulemaking and other multiparty proceedings before the California Public Utilities Commission, California Energy Commission, and California Independent System Operator. Our lawyers also work with the Department of Conservation and individual counties throughout California on regulations and ordinances implementing the Williamson Act. We advocate for workable regulations including the development of fracking regulations before the Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources.
- Energy Contracts: Our energy lawyers negotiate leases on behalf of both producers and landowners for oil, gas and geothermal resources. We represent both buyers and sellers of electric energy in contract negotiations. We also negotiate rooftop and ground mount solar lease agreements for landowners and business. And, we represent landowners and developers of wind projects in lease negotiations.
