California Expands Paid Family Leave

Employment Law

June 16, 2014

The California Legislature also recently amended the California Paid Family Leave law.  The current law applies to workers who take time off work to care for a seriously ill child, spouse, parent, or domestic partner, or to bond with a minor child within one year of the child’s birth or placement of the child in connection with foster care or adoption.  As of July 1, coverage expands to workers who take time off to care for a seriously ill grandparent, grandchild, sibling, or parent-in-law as well.  This change does not impose a new leave of absence mandate on employers.   Paid Family Leave is funded by employees’ contributions to the Unemployment Compensation Disability Fund, not by employers.
