Patrick Doust is an accomplished litigator with trial experience in a variety of different contexts, including elder abuse, trusts and wills, real estate, general commercial litigation and white collar criminal defense. Patrick’s extensive experience in aggressively litigating high value and oftentimes emotionally charged cases across a wide spectrum of subject matters gives him a well-rounded knowledge base to draw upon in advocating for clients.  

Patrick’s practice focuses on Trust and Estate litigation, where his ability to understand complicated family dynamics and explain nuanced legal issues in plain English allows him to guide his clients to successful outcomes. Patrick strives to keep the door open to compromise while zealously working to protect his client’s rights and prepare for trial. 

Before joining Downey Brand, Patrick practiced for six years in Los Angeles with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where he represented individuals as well as large, multinational companies in a variety of disputes. After Gibson Dunn, Patrick spent 2018 as a Legal Fellow in International Justice Mission’s Mumbai, India office where he worked with local prosecutors to bring criminal charges against sex-traffickers.   
 

Experience

  • First chaired an elder abuse case in Los Angeles Superior Court.  This case involved an infirm elder who was tricked into signing a quitclaim deed giving away his sole possession, a million dollar property, to his estranged daughter from a previous marriage.  The matter resulted in a million-dollar settlement on the eve of trial in the client’s favor.
  • Second chaired a week long elder abuse trial in Los Angeles Superior Court.  In this matter, his client, an elderly and illiterate monolingual Spanish speaker, was tricked into signing away the rights to his home that he had shared with his deceased wife for more than 33 years. After a six-day trial, the jury returned a virtually unanimous verdict for his client on financial elder abuse and intentional interference with expected inheritance claims, and awarded damages of over half a million dollars.  
  • Defended a large Las Vegas casino in a multi-week federal jury trial concerning 66 alleged fraudulent transfers.  The trial focused on the casino’s compliance with state and federal anti-money laundering regulations.  The jury returned a verdict in favor of the casino with respect to 59 of the 66 alleged transfers. 
  • Represented an international cosmetics manufacturer in a two-week long breach of contract international arbitration before a panel which included two retired federal judges.  The panel found in his client’s favor that the distributor breached the distribution agreement by failing to distribute the product in appropriate locations. 
  • Represented a large health insurance company in an antitrust trial in federal court in Michigan relating to the defendant’s inclusion of non-competitive clauses in provider contracts. The matter settled at trial with terms favorable to his client.
  • Represented of a Californian public university system against a healthcare consulting company in a breach of contract trial in Santa Clara Superior Court relating to the consultant’s negligence in calculating student health insurance premiums.  The matter settled at trial with terms favorable to his client.
  • Represented a French telecommunication company in a shareholder derivative suit in Delaware Chancery Court relating to allegations of insider dealing and conflicts of interest. The matter settled just prior to trial with terms favorable to his client.
  • Successfully defended laboratory company owner against accusations of civil and criminal Medi-Cal, Medicare and Medicaid fraud. 
  • Obtained special education services for children in foster care from Los Angeles Unified School District.
