An injunction was recently
granted against Oakland's ordinance that would ban plastic shopping
bags. The ban was challenged by the Coalition to Support Plastic
Bag Recycling, a group of plastic bag makers and recyclers, because
a full environmental review was never done. Environmental law attorney,
Michael Mills, who argued that without the full review, the proposed
bag alternatives could be more harmful to the environment, has been
quoted in a host of media outlets who have reported on the Oakland
ordinance.

In one of the largest settlement agreements obtained by a Sacramento
law firm, Downey Brand attorneys ended a three-year legal battle
between client Park Cattle Company, and the owner of South Lake
Tahoe's Horizon Hotel Casino. Horizon owners Bill Yung and Columbia
Sussex Corporation agreed to pay $165 million and to return the
property within three years. After eight weeks of trial, two days
before the matter was to be turned over to the jury, opposing representatives
agreed to enter into settlement negotiations.
